Subtraction Using Number Line Digits Less Than 8

Number Line:

A horizontal line that has divisions marked at equal intervals. The marking on a scale represent number line.

Steps to find difference of two numbers using number line:

To find the difference of two numbers using a number line we will follow the following steps

1. We will draw an arc covering the number of divisions equal to the first number.

2. Then from the ending point of the first arc we will draw an arc in the backward direction covering the number of divisions equal to the second number.

3. The end point of the second arc shows the  difference of two numbers.

In the figure below shows the subtraction of  5 - 3 on a number line     The first arc covers 5 divisions as the first number is 5. The second arc starts from the endpoint of the first arc in the backward direction and covers 3 divisions as the second number is 3. The end point of the second arc is at 2. So on subtracting 3 from 5 we get 2.

So we can say that

5 divisions  minus 3 divisions is equal to 2 divisions.

Similarly

7 divisions  minus 4 division is equal to 3 divisions.

The first arc covers 7 divisions as the first number is 7. The second arc starts from the endpoint of the first arc in the backward direction and covers 4 division as the second number is 4. The end point of the second arc is at 3. So on subtracting 4 from 7 we get 3.
